Concert #4 - Saturday, December 16, 2006, 8:00 pm
Lucas Theatre for the Arts
The Savannah Concert Association presents
Charles Wadsworth and Friends
Chee-Yun, violin
Edward Arron, cello
Christopher O'Riley, piano
Music by Strauss, Piazolla, Debussey, Brahms
Charles Wadsworth prizes his Southern connections. He is Savannah's favorite musical host, a
friend of thousands of virtuosos, and a world champion of chamber music. His presentation of an all-star concert at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics is well remembered, and his popularity at the Spoleto USA Festival (33 appearances in 2006) is legendary.
This is the tenth time Charles Wadsworth has appeared in Savannah
in little more than two years. Regular concertgoers know of his
glowing reputation as the world’s chamber music ringmaster. Triply
talented as impresario, pianist and host, he attracts top musicians to
his tours, and over the years his audiences add up to millions. Loved
for his artistry, his wit and his engaging personality, Wadsworth
demonstrates a unique gift for bringing out the essence of each piece
on the program with his onstage remarks. Welcome back, Charles!
Chee-Yun appeared in the Concert Association’s past two seasons. She
first performed in public at age eight in her native Seoul after she had
won the Grand Prize of the Korean Times Competition. Chee-Yun came
to the U.S. at age 13, and following advanced studies at the Juilliard
School, went on to capture the attention of the entire musical world. The Very Best of Chee-Yun CDs are for sale in the lobby of the Lucas Theatre. After the concert, Chee-Yun will be on hand to autograph copies.
The 2006-2007 season marks Edward Arron's fourth season as the
Artistic Director of the Metropolitan Museum Artists in Concert, a
chamber ensemble created in 2003 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of
the Museum's prestigious Concerts and Lectures series. Each performance
of the MMAinC is broadcast live on New York’s classical radio
station, WQXR. Mr. Arron is also the artistic coordinator of the
Caramoor Virtuosi and is the artistic director of the Alpenglow Chamber
Music Festival in Summit County, Colorado.
Christopher O'Riley has been honored with many awards at the Leeds,
Van Cliburn, Busoni and Montreal competitions. He has achieved nationwide
popularity with his radio program From the Top. Heard on NPR
(locally on WSVH FM91) every Sunday at 1PM, he introduces and sometimes performs with the next generation of brilliant young musicians.
Because of his enthusiasm and talent as an emcee, he enjoys high ratings.
