Savannah Concert Association - The Classical Music You Love to Hear

"If music be the food of love, play on." -- Shakespeare

Sophisticated Listening

Nothing beats a live performance. CDs and radio are good entertainment, but they lack the exciting interplay between performer and audience, each stimulating the other. Live concerts are re-creations of masterworks, not re-runs.

We are luckier than audiences of a century ago because we have been surrounded all our lives by music from phonographs, radio, movies, television - even Muzak - and our subconscious minds have developed a keen musical sophistication. We demand quality as readily as we reject banality.

Lucas Theatre insidePrinted programs at Savannah Concert Association events have notes about the performers and their selections. Audiences can also read this information before the concert by visiting this website's Current Season section. Now they don't have to speed-read the program as the theatre lights are dimming.

Experienced concert goers know their enjoyment of a concert is greatly enhanced if they have some prior familiarity with the music.

Before going to a Savannah Concert Association event, you will do yourself a great favor if you find out what is to be performed. If the music will be new to your ears, do some preliminaries:

  • Buy or borrow CDs of the music or
  • Listen to WSVH, FM91, which frequently previews the Association's concert in its Midday Music Program, 11am to 2pm weekdays, or
  • Using the Internet, follow new procedures for downloading the music

Music Teachers: By all means, take advantage of these procedures on behalf of your students. Their edification and enjoyment of the concert depends on your giving them proper preparation.

There is an added bonus to attending classical music performances. They are social events, and you meet some interesting people. Classical music enthusiasts always have a warm welcome for others of the same persuasion. Enjoy the concerts!
